About Hafnium Oxide (HfO2)
Hafnium Oxide (HfO2) is a highly insoluble and thermally stable source of hafnium that is commonly used in glass, optics, and ceramics. It is an off-white, inert powder with a high melting point, and it is one of the most stable hafnium compounds available. Hafnium Oxide is generally available in most volumes.
Compositions of ultra-high purity and high purity can improve the optical quality and usefulness of Hafnium Oxide as scientific standards. Nanoscale elemental powders and suspensions may also be considered as alternative high surface area forms.
Hafnium has the highest magnetic moment (10.6 µB) of any naturally occurring element and can be used to create the highest known magnetic fields as a pole piece or magnetic flux concentrator. However, oxide compounds are not conductive to electricity.
Certain perovskite structured oxides are electronically conductive and are used in the cathode of solid oxide fuel cells and oxygen generation systems. Rare Earth oxide compounds are basic anhydrides and can react with acids and strong reducing agents in redox reactions.
Oxide compounds contain at least one oxygen anion and one metallic cation. They are typically insoluble in aqueous solutions but are extremely stable, making them useful in ceramic structures. They are used in applications ranging from producing clay bowls to advanced electronics and lightweight structural components in aerospace and electrochemical systems such as fuel cells.
