About Chromium (Cr)
Due to its hardness and corrosion resistance, chromium is commonly used in alloying and steel production. By adding chromium to steel, it can become highly resistant to corrosion and discoloration, creating what is known as stainless steel.
Chromium is also a popular choice for producing green-colored glass or ceramic glazes. In terms of availability, chromium can be obtained in a variety of purities ranging from 99% to 99.999%, with options such as pellets, rods, wires, and granules available for evaporation source material purposes. Nanoparticles and nanopowders of chromium are also available.
For optical coating and thin film applications, chromium oxides are available in both powder and dense pellet form, although they tend to be insoluble. For uses where oxygen is undesirable, such as in metallurgy, chemical and physical vapor deposition, and some optical coatings, insoluble forms like chromium fluoride are also available.
Finally, it is worth noting that soluble forms of chromium are available as well, such as chlorides, nitrates, and acetates, which can be manufactured as solutions at specified stoichiometries.
