About Gadolinium (Gd)
Gadolinium is a highly versatile element that finds use in a variety of applications. Its high magnetic moment of 7.94µB makes it useful in magnetic resonance imaging, where it is complexed with EDTA ligands to create a High Purity (99.999%) Gadolinium (Gd) Sputtering Targetinjectable contrast agent. This agent can reduce relaxation times and enhance signal intensity due to gadolinium's magnetic properties.
The half-full 4f electron shell of gadolinium, which is extra stable and has no low-lying energy levels, makes it an excellent inert phosphor host. This property enables gadolinium to act as a host for x-ray cassettes and scintillator materials used in computer tomography.
Gadolinium is available in various forms, including metal and compounds with purities ranging from 99% to 99.999% (ACS grade to ultra-high purity). These forms include pellets, rods, wires, and granules for evaporation source material purposes. Oxides are available in powder and dense pellet form for optical coating and thin film applications. Fluorides, which are insoluble forms of gadolinium, are also available for use in metallurgy, chemical and physical vapor deposition, and some optical coatings.
Soluble forms of gadolinium, including chlorides, nitrates, and acetates, can be manufactured as solutions at specified stoichiometries. These compounds find use in a variety of applications.
