About Magnesium Oxide (MgO)
Magnesium Oxide is a highly insoluble and thermally stable source of Magnesium. It is commonly used in glass, optic, and ceramic applications due to its properties. Magnesium oxide is a white, hygroscopic powder that forms magnesium hydroxide when in the presence of water. It was historically known as magnesia alba, which means "white mineral from Magnesia."
Oxide compounds are generally not conductive to electricity. However, perovskite structured oxides are exceptions, and they find applications in the cathodes of solid oxide fuel cells and oxygen generation systems. Oxide compounds contain at least one oxygen anion and one metallic cation. They are typically insoluble in water, making them stable and useful in ceramic structures. From producing clay bowls to advanced electronics and light-weight structural components in aerospace and electrochemical applications, metal oxide compounds have versatile uses.
Magnesium Oxide is a basic anhydride that can react with acids and strong reducing agents in redox reactions.
