About Lead (Pb)

Lead-based alloys, such as solder, type metal, and anti-friction metals and compounds, have widespread industrial use. Lead oxides, on the other hand, are used in producing fine "crystal glass" and "flint glass" of a high index of refraction for achromatic lenses. Additionally, lead ceramics and crystalline materials find numerous industrial and optical applications, including infrared detection and imaging.

Semiconductors based on lead, such as lead telluride, lead selenide, and lead antimonide, are also gaining widespread use in photovoltaic (solar energy) cells and infrared detectors. However, the use of lead in paints has been drastically curtailed in recent years due to health hazards. White lead, basic carbonate, sublimed white lead, chrome yellow, and other lead compounds are used in paints.
