About Lead (Pb)
Lead is a versatile metal with a wide range of industrial applications due to its exceptional physical properties. Large quantities of lead, both the dioxide and the metal, are used in batteries, cable covering, plumbing, and ammunition. Lead is highly resistant to corrosion, making it ideal for containing corrosive liquids like sulfuric acid. It is also an excellent sound and vibration absorber and is commonly used as radiation shielding for X-ray equipment and nuclear reactors.
Lead-based alloys, such as solder, type metal, and anti-friction metals and compounds, have widespread industrial use. Lead oxides, on the other hand, are used in producing fine "crystal glass" and "flint glass" of a high index of refraction for achromatic lenses. Additionally, lead ceramics and crystalline materials find numerous industrial and optical applications, including infrared detection and imaging.
Semiconductors based on lead, such as lead telluride, lead selenide, and lead antimonide, are also gaining widespread use in photovoltaic (solar energy) cells and infrared detectors. However, the use of lead in paints has been drastically curtailed in recent years due to health hazards. White lead, basic carbonate, sublimed white lead, chrome yellow, and other lead compounds are used in paints.
Lead is available in various forms, including metal and compounds with purities ranging from 99% to 99.9999% (ACS grade to ultra-high purity). Lead oxides are available in powders and dense pellets for optical coating and thin film applications. On the other hand, lead fluorides are insoluble and find use in metallurgy, chemical, and physical vapor deposition and some optical coatings. Finally, soluble forms of lead, including chlorides, nitrates, and acetates, are manufactured as solutions at specified stoichiometries.
