About Bismuth (Bi)
Bismuth, a metal with unique properties, has found numerous applications in various industries. Its property of expanding on solidification makes it an ideal material for making sharp castings of objects that are susceptible to damage by high temperatures.
Bismuth forms low-melting alloys with metals like tin, cadmium, etc. that are widely used in safety devices for fire detection and extinguishing systems. Additionally, bismuth is used in producing malleable irons and as a catalyst for making acrylic fibers.
When heated in air, bismuth burns with a blue flame, forming yellow fumes of the oxide. It is also used as a thermocoupling material and a carrier for 235 U or 233 U fuel in nuclear reactors. Its soluble salts are useful for detection work, as they form unsoluble basic salts with water.
Bismuth oxychloride is extensively used in cosmetics, while elemental or metallic forms of bismuth such as pellets, rods, wires, and granules are used for evaporation source material purposes. Bismuth oxide is available in forms such as powders and dense pellets, useful for applications like optical coating and thin film.
